Metamorphosis

Butterfly you echo freedom,
but I know you were caged too at some point.
Your emancipation was always in the pipeline
still you slithered your way
through the earth searching for green,
knowing your hunger was only temporary.

From egg to animal
from striped to pattern perfect.
It was only a matter of time before,
you could leave your familiar surroundings.
Encased in your own biology,
from this you couldn't escape -
using it to inevitably build yourself up to a new state.

You were never yourself for too long
some processes you went through
we saw as ugly,
in comparison to who you would be
once your metamorphosis was complete.

I see your growth as beauty
the constant changes you went through were grueling-
shedding your skin just to find a home
that you could nurture yourself
until you was ready to embrace the world.

When it was time and you came out of your shell
was you scared to use your wings?
Did you know their meaning?
What they could bring?

Did the world look more beautiful,
from a higher vantage point?
Was the warm reception to your perfect beauty
the reason you fluttered so confidently?

In your symmetrical body
did you use your time wisely?
Living for love, for procreation and hunger
because you knew you weren't made to stay?
You were made to mate,
to leave your legacy to another?

The minute you were emancipated,
could you have gone then?
Because you felt what it feels like to fly
without inhibition.
Forced to harden your wings-
You. Were. Free.

Did you know it?
